Nokia extends IBM Lotus email access to 80 million mobile phones

Lotus Notes Support for Nokia S60 Devices Expands Market Opportunity

Espoo, Finland and Armonk, NY, USA - Nokia and IBM today announced IBM Lotus Notes support for a number of Nokia's S60-based mobile phones, meaning that millions of Lotus Notes users are now able to access email with their Nokia devices. This also represents a significant market opportunity for IBM Lotus Notes -- which has 140 million licensed users -- with many Nokia customers now able to purchase Lotus Notes and access its collaboration capabilities on the go.

With this announcement, more than 80 million people - the number of Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices shipped globally* - can connect to corporate email accounts via Lotus Domino Server software known as Lotus Notes Traveler. This software provides real time access to email, calendar, address book, journal and to-do list data and will be available for Nokia devices in December 2008.

According to IBM's Institute for Business Value, this year, for the first time, more people in the world will have a mobile device than a land-line telephone. IBM predicts one billion mobile Web users by 2011 and a significant shift in the way the majority of people will interact with the Web over the next decade. In fact, mobile devices now outnumber television sets, credit cards and personal computers.

"This is another strong affirmation of our business mobility vision, which is to establish partnerships with the world's leading enterprise vendors. This collaboration means nearly 90 percent of business email can be mobilized with Nokia devices, without needing to purchase additional servers, middleware or licenses. With the presence, position and technology that IBM have in the corporate email market, they are an essential partner for us in enterprise," says Soren Petersen, senior vice president, Nokia. "People need to be connected to their email, information and network when they are out of the office and that has to be done conveniently and on their terms. Lotus Notes Traveler for Nokia devices is a great example of that."

"We are excited about IBM's growing relationship with Nokia and what this does for the build-out of the mobile Web," said Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president of IBM Lotus Software. We are literally freeing millions of people using Nokia's Symbian platform from having to rely on a desktop or laptop to access their important business communications. Working with the market leader like Nokia is a natural fit for attaining IBM's goals of maintaining the flow of business, regardless of time, distance or location -- all for no additional charge for both of our companies' current customers and a new opportunity for new customers."

This announcement is a major development in IBM's efforts to expand mobile support for the Lotus software portfolio. The ability to connect securely to business email is an example of Tomorrow at Work, an IBM initiative that examines a changing work environment and anticipates trends in technology, business, society and culture. Other IBM Lotus technologies that can be mobilized for anytime anywhere work include Lotus Sametime for instant messaging and unified communications, Lotus Connections for enterprise social networking and Lotus Quickr for social content sharing.

Nokia launches Eseries messaging device with mass market appeal

Nokia E63 joins the successful Nokia E71 to form a compelling QWERTY messaging device range

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced the latest addition to its Eseries range, the Nokia E63, designed for people who need to manage their business and personal lives equally well. Building on the success of the Nokia E71, the company's flagship messaging device, the Nokia E63 brings the QWERTY keyboard form factor to a broader audience at a great price. The Nokia E63 is expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks for an estimated retail price of EUR 199, before taxes and subsidies.

"Our research shows that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two. When someone sits down at lunch, they want to update their social network or browse their personal email account and they don't want work getting in the way of that. It's another great case of technology adapting to the people that use it," says Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. "The Nokia E63 is a new proposition for Eseries - a messaging device where people will be just as involved in their social network as they are in their business network."

Whilst appealing to a new group of consumers with a design that feels great in the hand and has two new colors, the Nokia E63 is still very much a member of the Eseries family. Petersen continues, "People use Eseries to access their corporate mail, review their calendar and work in their business network, so the Nokia E63 still includes Wi-Fi connectivity, easy access to Mail for Exchange and dedicated key access to contacts, calendar and email."

The Nokia E63 also has the ability to switch modes with a single key press, switching from a view of corporate mail, appointments and intranet data, to a personal mode with a picture of friends, personal email and shortcuts to favorite hobby blogs or websites. Petersen adds, "The amazing response we have seen to the Nokia E71, which has very quickly become the best selling model in its category, let us know that we are heading in the right direction. People want a rich experience when using messaging, social networks and the Internet. With the Nokia E63 you can enjoy the web, update your status and work meaningfully with multiple email accounts."

The Nokia E63 also includes Files on Ovi, a service where people can get remote access to their PC files even when their computer is offline. Anyone buying the handset will have access to 1GB of online file storage for free.

The Nokia E63 will be available in ruby red or ultramarine blue with a range of multimedia features. Record and view images and videos with the digital camera and bright landscape display, listen to music downloaded from the Nokia Music Store, or a number of other sources, via the standard 3,5 mm audio jack or customize the device through the thousands of applications available for download.

Boo! Ghostly game wins top prize in Nokia Mobile Games Innovation Challenge

October 29, 2008 Top three winners announced at Nokia Games Summit awards ceremony

Rome, Italy and Espoo, Finland - Nokia revealed that Ghostwire, by A Different Game from Sweden, is the winner of the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge. Ghostwire is a casual collection and adventure game, where players use the unique features of the mobile device to communicate with the world of ghosts. Ghostwire also features an augmented reality-powered mini-game, where players can use the camera on their mobile device to find ghosts. At the Nokia Games Summit awards ceremony, A Different Game was awarded the top prize of 40,000 EUR to further develop their concept.

Sweden's Jadestone and France's C4M, came in second place with Melokey to win 20,000 EUR. Eclipse Interactive from the United Kingdom claimed third place and 10,000 EUR with Watchers. As well as the prize money, each of the winners will be given pre-production contracts with Nokia Games Publishing. The winning three titles were chosen by a panel of independent industry experts, selected from a final shortlist of ten concepts from around the globe.

"We are happy to see such exciting mobile game concepts come from each of the three winners of the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge and are looking forward to seeing these innovative ideas come to life," said Dr Mark Ollila, director of games publishing, Nokia.

"The standard of the concepts submitted to the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge was very high, and it has been fascinating to see the different types of ideas created for mobile. It has been a difficult decision, but we were all impressed by Ghostwire," said Maarten Noyons, founder and general manager of the International Mobile Gaming Awards (IMGA) and head of the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge judging panel.

Noyons added, "This is a refreshing game that is truly 'made-for-mobile', using augmented reality in a different way. Your mobile phone helps you to discover and actually see a hidden world of mysteries and ghosts, to communicate with them, to collect them and to, as the makers state, give them peace. All judges agreed that this is a game they'd like to see progress."

The winner, Tom Söderlund, CEO of A Different Game said, "We believe Ghostwire has the potential to become an exhilarating and innovative game, and we're happy the jury agrees with us. The entire team is overwhelmed and excited to win this important award."

Second Prize was awarded to Melokey which was chosen for its potential to bring music and games to mobile with advanced social networking features. Melokey is a music game for mobile devices where players learn to master songs and play them against other in-game characters and competitors to win the hearts of fans. Once they have the hang of how to master the play interface via the immersive single player campaign, players can start playing their own favourite music, not just on their own, but together with friends.

Third Prize, Watchers, is a conspiracy adventure-themed game and is part of the new generation of games which are using location and context as an essential element. The game will use Nokia Maps and other real world tools to find locations. Players must explore these locations to uncover clues and use all their wits and any means necessary, to find out who they are, why they are trapped, and who is behind it all. Watchers is supported with episodic game play and offers players the chance to provide content to challenge other fellow conspiracy theorists.

The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge, launched in April 2008, is designed to encourage the development of innovative game concepts with the power to positively disrupt the global mobile gaming industry and to help propel mobile gaming with handheld devices into a new and exciting future.

The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge, sponsored by Nokia Games Publishing, called for mobile game developers to submit concepts that will help drive mobile gaming to the next level, relying on the advanced features and functionalities of N-Gage-compatible devices, and Java- or Symbian-based Series 40 or S60 devices from Nokia.

Industry veteran to lead the foundation that will drive the future of the leading open mobile platform for smartphones

LONDON, United Kingdom, 22 October, 2008 – The ten initial board members of the Symbian Foundation (AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Samsung Electronics, Sony Ericsson, ST-NXP Wireless, Texas Instruments and Vodafone) today announced the nomination of Lee Williams as the Executive Director for the planned foundation. Lee is currently head of the S60 organization in Nokia’s Devices business.

"We are delighted to have such a strong and experienced leader to head the Symbian Foundation" said Kris Rinne, senior vice president, architecture and planning, AT&T on behalf of the initial board members. "Lee Williams is well known in our industry and has been a driving force in the establishment of the foundation. Following an extensive, independent selection process, we believe that he is the best candidate to lead the foundation. He will now work to ensure we get the most complete and competitive Symbian Foundation platform offering and setup the operations needed to drive the platform to its next phase of evolution as quickly as possible. "

"I feel honored to have been invited to serve in this role", said Lee Williams. &quotThis is a great opportunity to directly help deliver on the promise of the foundation, working with the stakeholders and prospective members who are so committed to make this initiative a success. To me, there can be no more exciting role in the mobile software world than to lead the Symbian Foundation."

52 companies have now announced their support for the planned Symbian Foundation, including 8 device manufacturers, 7 semiconductor companies, 9 mobile network operators, 27 services and software companies and 1 financial services provider. More details are available at www.symbianfoundation.org, where hundreds of other organizations have registered their interest in learning more about the Symbian Foundation, since plans were announced in June 2008.

As previously announced, the plans for the establishment of the Symbian Foundation and royalty-free licensing of foundation software are:

1. The acquisition of Symbian Limited by Nokia, expected to close in Q4, 2008, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
2. Software assets are contributed to the foundation, including Symbian OS™ and S60 by Nokia, UIQ technology by Motorola and Sony Ericsson and MOAP(S) by NTT DOCOMO and Fujitsu.
3. This contributed software will be available under a royalty-free license to foundation members from the first day of Symbian Foundation operations, expected 1H 2009.
4. The Foundation will work to unify the platform, with the first unified foundation release expected in 2009.
5. The foundation will work to make the platform available in open source by June 2010 (two years from the Symbian Foundation announcement)

Lee Williams will remain in his current role as head of the S60 organization in Nokia’s Devices business until January 1, 2009, or until such time as the foundation and its leadership team are in place and operational. The operation of the foundation remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Notes for editors

Further information about the Symbian Foundation is available at www.symbianfoundation.org.

Symbian and all Symbian based trademarks and logos are trademarks of Symbian Software Limited. The operation of the proposed Symbian Foundation remains subject to regulatory approvals. Until such approvals are obtained, and the Symbian Foundation has become fully operational, Symbian Software Limited retains exclusive responsibility for all licensing and marketing activities related to Symbian OS.

About the Symbian Foundation

On June 24, 2008, mobile industry leaders announced their intent to create the Symbian Foundation, with membership open to all organizations. At the same time, Nokia announced its offer to acquire Symbian Limited. Following the close of that acquisition, Nokia will contribute Symbian OS and S60 software to the Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola will contribute technology from UIQ and DOCOMO and Fujitsu have indicated their willingness to contribute MOAP(S) assets.

The contributed software will be available for all foundation members under a royalty-free license, from the foundation’s first day of operations, expected to be during the first half of 2009, dependent upon the close of the acquisition of Symbian Limited by Nokia, expected in the fourth quarter of 2008. From these contributions, the foundation will then provide a unified platform with a single UI framework. The foundation will make selected components available as open source at launch and then work to establish the most complete mobile software offering available in open source.

The foundation’s platform will build on Symbian OS, today’s leading open mobile software operating system with more than 200 million mobile phones already shipped by multiple vendors across more than 250 major network operators and with tens of thousands of third-party applications already available for these devices .

The foundation software licensing model and governance has been selected to secure transparency, encourage contribution and maintain platform consistency. The foundation will promote collaboration, contributions and active participation and will operate as a meritocracy. Device manufacturers will be eligible for seats based on number of Symbian Foundation platform-based devices shipped, with the other board members selected by election and contribution.

Only one seat will be available per organization on the board of directors and each of the councils.

S60 5th Edition brings new, advanced multimedia and Internet experiences to devices with touch user interfaces and sensor technologies

S60 5th Edition SDK and tools available for software developers

Espoo, Finland - Today sees the introduction of S60 5th Edition, the latest release of the world's leading, open smartphone platform, S60 on Symbian OS. The S60 5th Edition has the most advanced set of features that enable new innovations and new experiences for consumers that want to fully embrace the use of smartphone products.

With S60 5th Edition, the user interface is extended by the introduction of touch and with full support for tactile feedback. Enhanced display resolution support and a new Widescreen mode further compliments the touch UI and enables engaging visual experiences. Also, for the first time, the platform includes a framework for the use of advanced sensor technology. This all allows S60 device manufacturers to create innovative new device concepts for a wider range of user segments, while preserving the rich capabilities of the existing software platform. The first S60 5th Edition based device, designed for music lovers, was announced today - the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

S60 software continues to lead in the support for and use of internet technologies, and includes the Web Browser for S60, which supports desktop-quality browsing with Adobe Flash Lite 3. With the touch enabled products and S60 5th Edition, Internet browsing is made more convenient by enabling scrolling Web pages and interacting directly with Web content by touching with a finger or the use of keys or stylus. The ecosystem now has more options, and user experiences are further enhanced with touch optimized toolbars and easy access to browser and internet application options.

Sensors enable very intuitive and smart usability for the key S60 applications. For example, silence the phone ringing by turning the phone upside down. The sensor framework in S60 5th Edition provides easy integration for wide range of sensors into vendor's devices, and enables them and developers to take advantage of sensor data to create new exiting and intuitive applications and features.

S60 5th Edition's new features continue to provide a complete solution for multimedia experiences. New image and video editors in the S60 5th Edition make it simple to capture and edit pictures and videos directly on the device, before sharing them with others. Users can for example decrease red eye, crop image highlights, adjust image quality or add text and graphics to pictures. With the video editor, users can quickly cut and merge videos and sound directly on the device. Support for large, high resolution displays makes it possible for users to better enjoy widescreen multimedia and these features.

"S60 5th Edition's new features and added functionality significantly enhances the products that intend to provide rich multimedia and Internet experiences for consumers. Intuitive sensor technologies, interactions via touch, and tactile feedback creates delight and excitement for consumers and unparalleled innovation opportunities for developers and internet content providers," said Lee Williams, Senior Vice President, S60 Software, Nokia. "With this release we will see manufacturers create and extend their portfolio of products with new types of devices addressing a broader range of consumer needs."

The implementation of the S60 Web Runtime in S60 5th Edition adds support for S60 Platform Services, which enables creation of personal and context aware Web widgets. Platform Services gives these Web standards based applications access to numerous applications and features of the S60 platform, such as calendar, contacts, GPS, messaging, audio, and video. Widgets can also mash-up information from the Internet together with selected information from the user's mobile device. These Platform Services are easily accessible to Web content developers and service providers via new JavaScript and Adobe Flash Actionscript extensions. All of these capabilities continue to provide the user with the most control over security and their own private data.

To lower the barrier to entry for new innovation, S60 5th Edition is also expanding its support for open source technologies through integrated support for Open C++. This support brings the Standard Template Library and other popular platform-independent C++ libraries to the S60 platform, extending the Open C offering. Together, Open C and Open C++ create opportunities for developers to utilize existing skills and code from other platforms in their S60 development projects, including open source components that run today on Linux and other open platforms.

"The versatile developer support offered by S60 5th Edition enables developers to write applications in a range of languages that they are already very familiar with," said Tom Libretto, Vice President, Forum Nokia. "That familiarity and being able to arm developers with the tools and technologies that best suit their needs will allow for further innovation of new applications and services, not only for S60 5th Edition, but also for S60 3rd Edition Feature Packs 1 and 2."

Developers are encouraged to leverage touch UI functionality in application design to get the full consumer advantage of touch in their solutions and create the best possible user experience. From today, S60 5th Edition SDK and tools are available to download via Forum Nokia.

"The S60 5th Edition SDK presents an exciting opportunity for mobile application development," said Erik Abair, senior vice president of engineering and co-founder of Kyte. "Development on this new platform will advance touch technology, provide more flexibility to create new user interfaces for our mobile application, Kyte Mobile Producer, and improve the overall user experience for consumers."

"Over the years, SHAPE Services have observed an astounding evolution in Nokia mobile platforms and development environments which have been further revolutionized by the latest Symbian S60 5th Edition SDK," said Igor Berezovsky, CEO, SHAPE Services GmbH. "It is great to see that Nokia was able to keep the original spirit of the S60 platform while continuing to provide compatibility for previous editions of S60. This allowed for quick and easy porting of Shape Services' IM+ All-In-One Instant messenger to the new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic."

The global smartphone market is growing. Almost 180 million S60 devices have already cumulatively been shipped by S60 licensees by the end of June 2008. More than a third of these are fully web-capable S60 3rd Edition devices.

Note to editors: We will have a live audiocast today at 9.00pm Helsinki time (+1 CET), which can be followed from the Nokia website at www.nokia.com/press. You may also post your questions while listening to the audiocast.

Nokia amps up music offering with new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Innovative 'Media Bar' and 'Contacts Bar' add human touch to music experience

Nokia Remix, London, United Kingdom and Singapore - Nokia turned up the volume on its music offering today by unveiling the new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, a mobile device for music that brings innovative new features to the mass market. Delivering on Nokia's vision to provide the best total music experience possible, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be among the first devices to support Comes With Music, Nokia's groundbreaking service which offers one year of unlimited access to the entire Nokia Music Store catalogue.

When it comes to music phones, people all over the world want a device that is a great music experience - with more memory, loud and powerful speakers, easy synchronization - and must still work well as a mobile phone with direct access to important contacts and content. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers on all counts and allows consumers to access and share content.

"With the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, we set out to connect people through the one thing we all feel a universal connection to - music," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia. "The way in which people enjoy music is different around the world. With that in mind, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic gives people the freedom to experience music they love in the way they prefer."

Media Bar, Contacts Bar - putting people first
Taking advantage of touch screen technology, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic introduces the 'Media Bar', a handy drop down menu that provides direct access to music and entertainment, including favourite tracks, videos and photos. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the web and to online sharing. Because the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports Flash content, individuals can surf the entire web, not just pieces of it. In addition, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials, including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks and support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the industry's most powerful sound.

Ensuring a seamless music experience, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also provides easy access to browse and purchase tracks from the Nokia Music Store, where applicable, while the newly updated Nokia Music PC software allows for easy drag-and-drop transfer of songs and management of any music collection.

The innovative 'Contacts Bar' lets consumers highlight four favorite contacts on their home-screen and, through a single touch, track a digital history of recent text messages, emails, phone logs, photos and blog updates.

"As Nokia's first mass-market device with a touch screen, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic turns a 'user interface' into a 'human interface' by truly putting people first. For example, we've introduced the Nokia Contacts Bar, which is like a digital RSS feed on your life," said Harlow. "By adding the benefits of touch screen technology to S60, the world's leading smartphone interface, Nokia is taking the familiar and giving it a human touch. We have used touch technology where it really adds value such as the Contacts Bar, Media Bar and clever shortcuts from the homescreen to menu items such as calendar, profiles and clock. "

For the best screen resolution available on a mobile phone, the 3.2" widescreen display brings photos, video clips and web content to life in vibrant color and true clarity. With a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording, the device is ideal for VGA quality video recording and playback.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and, with a single touch, images or videos can be shared via a favorite online community, such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook. Music playlist song titles can also be shared through Bluetooth, MMS or online sharing.

Music for the masses

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports 60 languages worldwide, which covers nearly 90 percent of the world's population. As people around the world use their phones in different ways, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, a pen stylus -- and for true music enthusiasts, a plectrum -- are all available.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available worldwide beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008 for an estimated retail price of 279 EUR before taxes and subsidies. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic featuring Comes With Music will be available early next year. Pricing details to follow.

Enhancing the experience, Nokia today unveiled four new music accessories including a new Bluetooth headset and three new stereo headsets.

Nokia announces Forum Nokia Calling All Innovators global developer contest

Dean Kamen endorses Forum Nokia's challenge

Espoo, Finland - Forum Nokia is proud to announce Calling All Innovators, a global contest for developers to create mobile applications that will help to better society.

Calling All Innovators challenges developers to think big about the opportunity to impact the quality of human life with mobile applications. Nokia will award up to USD 150 000 in cash and prizes, in addition to helping the winning developers distribute their mobile applications.

Dean Kamen, the global technology pioneer best known for inventing the Segway PT and for founding FIRST, (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization which inspires high school students worldwide to study science and technology, has endorsed Calling All Innovators.

"For over 15 years, I've been focused on sparking the curiosity of up-and-coming inventors, especially kids, by showing them that science, technology and problem solving is rewarding, and important," said Kamen. "Now that mobile devices are becoming as powerful as personal computers and more ubiquitous, challenging mobile developers and young inventors to develop the right applications can take the device simply known as a cellular phone and transform it into a catalyst to help society in many different ways."

Nokia and Kamen share the belief that technology can be a key driver of significant social and environmental change, particularly in emerging economies, where conflicts over scarce resources often impede the potential for human development. Kamen, who has been actively engaged in global social programs and was awarded the 2006 Global Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations, has said, "We know 50 percent of all the diseases you could name, would be wiped out if people had access to clean water." Nokia and Kamen challenge developers participating in Calling All Innovators to think about the possibilities. What if a mobile device could test the potability of water, or enable people in remote villages to access, manage or distribute scarce resources such as electricity or water?

"With Nokia's belief in social responsibility, we support Dean Kamen's relentless pursuit to help the world through the use of technology, " said Tom Libretto, Vice President, Forum Nokia, "Calling All Innovators is not just about making mobile applications that could help society; it's about developing mobile applications that will help society. Imagine if an application could help relief workers reallocate resources in real time for disaster-torn areas - how much could that help both those in need as well as the relief workers in the area? "

Calling All Innovators challenges mobile application developers worldwide to create applications that will enhance the use of mobile devices in real world scenarios, in one of the three following categories:

- ECO-Challenge: Make a difference by submitting an application that will work to minimize mobility's global environmental impact and develop ways to offer mobile solutions that help consumers make sustainable choices such as reducing their energy consumption or carbon footprint.

- Emerging Markets: This category opens up new opportunities for developers to imagine the possibilities of pioneering applications and services impacting the daily lives of millions in developing nations, which could include solutions for education, health data access, infotainment, rural agriculture, or any other application that improves lives in emerging markets.

- Technology Showcase: This is an opportunity to create and showcase compelling, experience driven applications, using any technology that runs on Series 40 or S60 devices, such as Flash Lite, Java, Python, or open source. From a single-purpose application to completely community driven, this developer's showdown will help open consumers' minds about what an application can do.

First place winners in each category will receive USD 25 000, a trip to Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona, and distribution of their application for free through a variety of Nokia channels. Second place winners in each category will receive USD 10 000 and third place winners will receive USD 5 000.

The contest opens on September 16, 2008 and all entries are due by December 15, 2008. Finalists will be selected and notified in January 2009.

More information about Forum Nokia's Calling All Innovators, including how to submit an application and complete contest rules and requirements, can be found online at www.callingallinnovators.com.
