Web Run-Time

Going beyond Web browsing with widgets

S60 software on Symbian OS brings the power and convenience of widgets to mobile devices with Web Run-Time. Powered by WebKit – the same feature-rich open-source Web technologies used by the highly-acclaimed Web Browser for S60 » , Web Run-Time enables Web developers to go mobile.

Widgets are lightweight Web applications developed using familiar, standards-based Web technologies used to create Web pages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and even advanced AJAX. They give S60 users a full Web experience with instant access to the most essential Web 2.0 services and Internet content. With widgets, people can personalize the content and services that matter most to them.

On April 23rd 2008, S60 enhanced its web Run-Time capabilities by integrating with Platform Services. Platform Services allow widgets to access S60's numerous applications and services securely, including the calendar, contacts, messaging, audio, video, images, GPS, and camera, via JavaScript APIs.

By combining the power of the web with the power of the S60 platform, consumers will be able to enjoy a personalized and context-aware experience. For example, a weather widget can access the user’s current location via the phone's built-in GPS to provide immediate local weather data. Or a flight tracker widget can easily fetch a travel itinerary from an airline’s website, save it to the phone's calendar application, and set a reminder. A few hours prior to departure, the widget will automatically check the flight's status by retrieving the flight details from the calendar.
